The Senate of Plateau State University (PLASU) convened its 87th regular meeting today, May 3rd, 2024, under the chairmanship of Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shedrack G. Best. The meeting focused on critical issues impacting the university's well-being and academic progress.
Security Concerns and Student Safety:
Prof. Best addressed the Senate regarding the recent security challenges plaguing communities surrounding the university and the subsequent student demonstrations on April 19th. The Senate expressed sincere condolences to the families of the two students who tragically lost their lives during the unrest.
Furthermore, the Senate strongly condemned the destructive actions of students who vandalized university property during the protests. They ratified the management's decision to postpone first-semester exams and temporarily close the university for ten days.
Faculty Promotions Announced:
On a brighter note, the Senate received an announcement from the Vice-Chancellor regarding the promotion of eleven senior lecturers to the rank of Associate Professor and one Associate Professor to the rank of Professor. These promotions stemmed from positive external evaluations of the nominees' academic publications.
The newly promoted academics hail from various departments across the university and include:
1. Dr. Buba Mamman Wufem (Chemistry) - Promoted to Full Professor
2. Dr. Tongshinung Monday Goteng (English) - Promoted to Associate Professor
3. Dr. Longmam Geoffrey Pienswang (History and International Studies) - Promoted to Associate Professor
4. Dr. Solomon Obida Yamma (Theatre Arts) - Promoted to Associate Professor
5. Dr. Chun Pamson Bentse (Mathematics) - Promoted to Associate Professor
6. Dr. Niri Martha Choji (Mathematics) - Promoted to Associate Professor
7. Dr. Patience C. Igeh (Microbiology) - Promoted to Associate Professor
8. Dr. Mary Francis Istifanus (Microbiology) - Promoted to Associate Professor
9. Dr. Keziah Yiltokom Ayuba (Management Studies) - Promoted to Associate Professor
10. Dr. Panshak Yohanna (Economics) - Promoted to Associate Professor
11. Dr. Samson Ishaya Dashit (Psychology) - Promoted to Associate Professor
12. Dr. Priscilla T. Marcus (Mass Communication) - Promoted to Associate Professor
All promotions are effective from October 1st, 2023.
